Biography of Sofiya Kirkbi (Sophia Kirkby)
Sophia Kirkby (born June 14, 2001, Ray Brook, New York) is an American luger specializing in women's doubles and singles, who made history as a member of the first US Olympic women's doubles team.
She grew up near Lake Placid and became interested in luge at the age of 7 after sledding down a hill. Her father James (a former US Air Force bobsledder) took her to the Mount Van Hovenberg track, where sledding became a family ritual. At age 10, USA Luge invited her to join their development group, and at 16, she was invited to join the junior national team. She won the US national championships in singles (2020, 2023, 2024) and then moved on to doubles.
Key achievements: bronze medalist at the 2022 and 2024 World Championships in doubles (with Shevon Forgan), silver medalist at the 2024 World Championships in team relay, seven World Cup medals in the 2024/25 season, including gold. 5th place in the women's doubles at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics (February 2026, historic debut of the discipline for women).
Honors the memory of her father James (who died in June 2024 from prostate cancer) by writing his last words on her gloves for each race. Works as a ceramist, selling handmade pins with symbols of women's doubles at the Olympics (possibly the first Olympian to sell products on site).
She is active on Instagram (@sophiakirkby__), where she shares her sledding, racing, ceramics, and personal life. She is unmarried, and in 2026 at the Olympics she called herself “the most eligible bachelorette” in the village and went on dates (including on Valentine's Day with an American from the UK). She lives in Lake Placid, New York.
Sofia Kirkby is a symbol of resilience and pioneering spirit: from backyard skating to Olympic pioneer in women's doubles, inspiring with her strength of spirit, creativity, and positivity after loss and injury.
